Port Orford Seafood Hub

Revitalizing the working waterfront of the Port of Port Orford is crucial to the full realization of the Port’s potential, and of the Port Orford community that relies on it. It will help sustain and expand commercial fishing as an economic driver in this economically challenged community and increase coastal Oregon’s resilience, perhaps spilling over to other coastal communities. Strengthening the Port’s ability to support a more robust direct to consumer seafood market, it will benefit the local community, its visitors, and others seeking direct access to high quality, nutritious seafood that is traceable to fishermen. Further, shoring up Port Orford’s waterfront infrastructure and diversifying opportunities for the local seafood sector will support economic and fishing flexibility, which will be critical with expected shifts due to climate change. The integration of ocean and seafood research, monitoring, education, and public engagement will lead to further innovation as the Port and commercial fleet embrace and prepare for the West Coast Fisheries of 2040 and beyond

At the core of this program is the Port Orford Seafood Hub. The hub will co-locate existing fresh and live seafood buyers, aquaculture businesses, maritime researchers, research and education laboratories, dive facilities, a cooperative seafood market, commercial scale community kitchen, cold storage, packing and shipping facilities, and small business incubator spaces.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Agriculture Marketing Services has provided an array of free facility design services (Project #A07FY22TAPOO) which have been critical to illustrating the Port’s vision for revitalization. The USDA team has designed a Seafood Hub that includes streamlined product handling from vessels to the hub, holding, processing, packing, and shipping operations for existing and new tenants. The design includes Port facilities, seawater filtration and treatment, cold storage, mariculture, ocean innovation lab facilities, business incubator spaces, Port offices and a maintenance shop.
