Supplemental Seawater System

Port of Port Orford – Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) Project – Seawater Delivery System – Supplemental System

This project will support the immediate installation of a seawater pump ashore and distribution system to meet existing urgent needs for current and pending users for access to undiluted seawater pumped directly from the ocean adjacent to the Port of Port Orford. The system will be designed and constructed to be used as back up for a new high-capacity seawater delivery system to be developed with funds from the EDA and Oregon State Legislature.

Beneficiaries of this system include current live fish buyer NorCal, Hallmark Seafoods, several new businesses in the commercial urchin fishery and aquaculture sectors, commercial fishermen seeking access to seawater for direct marketing initiatives, aquaculture research and restoration initiatives, fisheries and oceanography researchers, and others seeking access to this resource.

This supplemental system will allow the Port to meet these urgent needs during the development of the new high-capacity system and will include the installation of a seawater reservoir to serve as a system backup. The Port and its users will realize immediate economic benefits through access to the seawater asset.

The development of this system, along with the submission of permit applications will expedite construction of the new high capacity system once the EDA funding is approved.

Funding: $500,000 in funding through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) – previously awarded to the Port of Port Orford for the development of the seawater distribution system.

Location of planned seawater intake to the west of the Dock.
